What to see by foot: Marbella

There are many interesting sights and charming areas of the city that can be explored
on foot. The town has several distinct districts, each with something different
to offer the visitor.
The town's old quarter is an eccentric mix of ancient Marbella intermingled with
modern cosmopolitan features. Here the visitor will find stately buildings and
ancient remnants splashed in among art galleries, boutiques, bars and cafés.
The area was once the centre for its Arab occupants, but was demolished to
incorporate the main square; and many Arab influenced remnants can still be
seen. The infamous Alcazaba wall is a major attraction here, as is the fabled
Orange Square. The square is home to the 16th century town hall, which is considered
to be one of the city's finest buildings.
Other noteworthy buildings include the Chief Magistrate's house and the Apostle
Santiago's Chapel (1552). The major thoroughfare of Salvador Rueda runs through
this district.
Avenue del Mar is the city's main promenade and a hive of activity, of both
visitors and locals alike. The promenade is notable for its extensive collection
of Dali sculptures as well as its many classy restaurants and bars.
Similarly, the Paseo Maritimo is a popular waterfront promenade, which runs
from Puerto Banus to Banana Beach, and is the focal point of modern Marbella.
Avenida Ricardo Soriano is also bustling with activity; while Avenida Ramon
y Cajal is lined with interesting Moorish architecture.
For art enthusiasts, Marbella is also home to the highly acclaimed Museum for
Contemporary Spanish Engravings, located in the ancient Bazan Hospital. Once
the former residence of the mayor, it now exhibits works by famous painters
such as Picasso, Tapies and Chillida. Other well-visited sites around town include:
the Encarnacin Church, famous for its stunning basilica; the San Juan de Dios
Chapel; and the religiously significant Ermitage de Santiago.
Marbella also prides itself on its many attractive parks and gardens. The Jardin
el Angel is particularly renowned as being one of the best botanical gardens
on the Costa del Sol. Arroyo de la Represa Park and Parque de la Constitucion
are similarly scenic and offer a pleasant respite from the hot afternoon sun.
