What to see by car: Marbella

Exploring beyond the city confines is particularly rewarding. The Marbella coastline
stretches for miles, offering endless lengths of white sand beach. The Costa del
Sol and the Mediterranean's warm waters attract numerous sunbathers year round.
The coast is also scattered with holiday villas, as well as many quaint historical
mountain towns.
Andalusia has over 800kms of sandy coastline; and its beaches cater for all
tastes. They range from the wide-open gold sands typical of the Costa de la
Luz and Costa del Sol region, to private hidden coves only reachable by windy
paths or tracks down cliffs typical of the Costa Tropical.
The coastline's warm clear waters allow for a multitude of water sports and
recreational activities, especially scuba diving and snorkelling. The province
of Cadiz is renowned for its good windsurfing, particularly in the town of Tarifa.
From Cadiz, the visitor can also visit the Rock of Gibraltar.
A particularly popular daytrip from Marbella is to the Mediterranean port of
Puerto Banus, just west of the city. Once a typical fishing village, the town
is now famous for boutique shopping and fashion, bodegas and upmarket restaurants,
discos, and even a casino. What it lacks in coastal charm it makes up for in
urban luxuries and a vibrant nightlife. If you want to get wet, there is also
a good beach in Puerto Banus, located just east of the marina.
Leaving the coast road at Marbella, visitors can explore many of the small
mountain villages that are spread out on La Concha's slopes. Ojen remains a
quiet town despite its accessibility. It has an attractive old town; and while
wandering the narrow cobbled streets, you can stop to taste the local aguardiente
liqueur that the town is famous for producing.
At a height of 366m, Monda is similarly unspoilt. It mainly attracts visitors
for its laid-back atmosphere and Moorish style castle, which dominates the village.
The nearby villages of Con and Tolox are also noteworthy.
Alternatively, the tourist hub of Malaga is located just 50kms northeast of
Marbella. The town has a long, rich history and its old quarter is a major attraction
in itself. Here the visitor can browse the famed Picasso Foundation, the interesting
La Alcazaba fortress, and the dramatic 16th century La Manquita cathedral.
For history buffs, the well-preserved remains of Roman villas and bathhouses
can be seen at the towns of Rio Verde and Guadalmina, to the west. Nearby, the
caves of Cueva de la Pileta and Cueva de Doña Trinidad have well preserved
Palaeolithic period rock paintings.
