Historical interest: Marbella

Marbella has a rich a history that can be traced back to 3000 BC. Evidence of Marbella's interesting past can still be seen around the city today; and the old historic centre is home to many remnants from the period of the 'walled in city'.

During the Arabic reign, the Arabs built a castle known today as Alcazaba wall, which surrounds the city with a moat and has just three entrances. Marbella was conquered by the Catholic king, Fernando, in 1485, ending Muslim dominance in the area. Engravings in the choir area of the Cathedral of Toledo depict the conquering of Marbella and successive battles.

During the 16th century, Marbella suffered many important changes, especially with regards to the town's structure. The previous Arab centre (today the old city) was partially demolished, and the main square was opened (today the Orange Square) to make way for the Royal Palace and main avenues, which today link the square to the main sea entrance at Puerta del Mar.

During the 19th century, the installation of the first Industrial Estates in Spain began; and Marbella was moulded into the industrialization of Malaga. Due to the town's development and ease of access to the Sierra Blanca Mines, Marbella fast became the second most important industrial province on the peninsula.

Today, Marbella prides itself on its heritage and diverse past. The town is similarly proud of its fast growth in less than a century: it developed from a small agricultural town, to a major mining centre, to the successful tourist resort hub of today.
