Mini guide to Menorca

Nestled in the heart of the eastern Mediterranean, Menorca (sometimes spelled 'Minorca') is the least developed of the Balearic Islands (Illes Balears) and provides a charming, quieter alternative to the tourist hustle and bustle of Majorca and Ibiza. Menorca boasts lovely beaches, inlets and stunning coastal views.

The beauty and accessibility of the island's landscape make it an idyllic destination for ramblers. In the S'Albufera des Grau National Park, walking enthusiasts can enjoy the natural environment and the views offered at the lookout at Favaritx, on the east coast of the island. The virgin beaches, in both the south and the north of the island, are also highly recommended for walking.

You are never far from the coast on this island, but the small, typically Mediterranean villages inland are best explored by car. A trip to Mount Toro, the highest point on the island, is also a must.

Geologically, the island is divided into two symmetrical but very different halves. The north has an uneven and rugged coastline with sparse vegetation and numerous islets, along with reddish and dark sandy beaches. The south is made up of calcareous rock, and is flat with smooth cliffs, gullies sculpted by water and coves of white sand surrounded by pines.

Since the dawn of civilization, Menorca's location has attracted different peoples who have coveted the island as a stopover port and a shelter. All these people left a rich historical legacy behind them, making Menorca a place of outstanding heritage. It is for this reason that historians and archaeologists consider Menorca to be an authentic open-air museum. There are fascinating historical sights around almost every corner.

Many airlines offer frequent regular flights from a number of points such as the other Illes Balears, mainland Spain and Europe. Cars can be rented at the airport, or if you want to use public transport, you can take a taxi or the bus to Maó. Once in Maó, there are plenty of connections with other buses which cover different routes on the island.
