What to see by foot: Menorca

Menorca is the only one of the Balearic Islands to be declared a biosphere reserve; it maintains its ecological treasures virtually intact thanks to a policy of sustainable growth which protects the natural environment. This is an idyllic land which no rambler can afford to miss. It is an unbeatable setting for trekking, thanks both to the beauty and the accessibility of its landscape, which is blessed with rolling hills.

In the S'Albufera des Grau National Park, trekking enthusiasts can enjoy the natural environment and the views offered at the lookout at Favaritx, on the east coast of the island. The virgin beaches, in both the south and the north of the island, are also highly recommended for walking.

Aside from the astounding countryside, there are plenty of other treasures to explore on foot. Mao is a maze of narrow streets built around one of the world's largest natural harbours. There are many historic buildings, the oldest being the Arch de San Roque, remains of the old city wall. The 17th century Town Hall and 18th century Church of Santa Maria are on the old town square. Behind the square is the plaza de la Conquesta, featuring a monument commemorating the island's liberator, King Alfonso III. Castell de Santa Agueda, just a few kilometres away, is the elevated ruin of a former Roman stronghold.

Ciutadella, best seen on foot, is the spiritual home and former capital of the island; it has a distinctly Moorish character and an attractive port surrounded by narrow, arcaded streets. Plaza de's Born (main square), with its ancient town hall and Palace Torre Saura, has postcard perfect views of the harbour. The cathedral in the Plaza de Pio XII took over 50 years to build and was completed in 1362.
