Mini guide to Nerja

Nerja is often called the 'Garden of Europe' because of its wonderfully fertile soil which makes it one of Spain's most productive agricultural areas. It lies at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol between the Mediterranean Sea and the huge mountains of the Sierra Nevada.

One of the town's best-known features is the Balcón de Europa (the Balcony of Europe), an extensive walkway following the top of a huge cliff offering postcard views of the sea and coastline way down below. This was also once the site of a large Moorish castle.

In fact, there are wonderful views all around Nerja. Apart from the dramatic Sierra Nevada, the town is also bordered by the Sierra Almijara. Its old town retains an unspoilt atmosphere, partly due to its dazzling whitewashed houses, many of which have wrought iron terraces, and are on narrow winding streets. The town's most important monuments are: El Salvador Church, built in the 17th century in a mix of Baroque and Moorish styles; and the Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which are located near Burriana Beach.

While in town, one thing you must do is to take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the town's old streets. When you're ready for a rest, there are many quaint cafés and bars where you can enjoy coffee, a glass of wine, or some typical Spanish tapas.

Near the town, the main attraction is the beautiful beaches which run for several kilometres, offering all kinds of water sports, including: scuba diving, sailing and waterskiing. There are also some interesting caves with prehistoric paintings just a few kilometres from town. One of them is even used as a concert hall where music performances are given in summer.

As it is a small town, getting to Nerja can be tricky, though the airport at Malaga, 50kms away, is connected to many major European cities. By car, Nerja is on the N340 coastal highway east of Malaga. At least 10 buses per day make the journey of 1 hour, 30 minutes from Málaga. From Almería, four buses a day make the three-hour trip.
