What to see by foot: Palma

Strolling around Palma's old town is delightful; it features an odd mix of cobbled
lanes and Gothic architecture surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants and tree-lined
boulevards. Excellent attractions in the area include: the Gothic cathedral La
Seo (dating from 1230); Palau de l'Almudaina (Muslim castle); Banyas Arabas (Arab
baths); Bellvar Castle and La Llotja (market area). For a further peek into Majorca's
esteemed history, visit the Museu de Mallorca.
Palma has many pedestrian-only streets and numerous coffee shops. There are
many quality shops that serve the island population. Remember that between 13:00
and 17:00 it is siesta time and much of the town closes down, including the
tourist sites and museums.
The winding streets of the surrounding historic quarter are home to the Museu
de Mallorca, a converted 15th century palace containing archaeological finds,
antiques and paintings of local dignitaries. The Banyas Arabs (Arab baths) are
also in this area. Opposite the waterfront is the Gothic masterpiece La Llotja,
which contains an art museum. Just west of the city centre is the impressive
Bellver Castle.
It's relaxing to walk from the old town along the port front until you get
to Club de Mar, where there are a large number of luxury yachts.
Alternatively, a stroll around the two covered markets can yield great souvenirs.
The smaller one, Santa Catalina, is found on the far side of the river in the
area past the new gardens of Plaza La Feixina. The larger market is in the opposite
direction past Plaza Major. If you are looking for a real flea market, then
the area near Plaza Porta d'es Camp at the bottom end of the Avenida is the
place to go on a Saturday morning. The easiest and best way to get there is
to walk through Parc del Mar and then up the Avinguda.
