What to see by car: Palma

The most popular way to get around the island is by car, as there are so many isolated coastal passes and winding cliff top drives to enjoy. Sa Calobra is a drive for the brave and courageous, and anyone who passes the legendary 270-degree curve half way down to the beach will be rewarded with some beautiful views.

On the Palma-Santanyi Road to Campos is Es Trenc - 11kms of virgin sandy beach. The area is popular with locals looking to idle away the weekend.

Valldemossa is a former monastery with lovely gardens and palatial rooms. The Costa Nord show offers a fascinating perspective on its history. Farther afield, Soller is a charming mountain village with attractive old buildings, lush gardens and open plazas.

Alcudia is an historic town where remains of the Roman city of Polletia have been excavated; the amphitheatre and museum are exemplary. For a change of scenery, the Parc Natural de l'Albufera nature reserve is excellent for walking, cycling and bird watching. Alternatively, the Coves del Drac (Caves of the Dragon) boasts almost 2,000m of caves and six subterranean lakes, as well as a large aquarium.

In the north, the rocky promontory of Cap de Formentor is an out-of-the-way paradise, great for walking, lizard spotting and bird watching. Alternatively, the 12 golf courses, open year round, make the island a paradise for all golfers; the most renowned course is Son Vida.

If you want to find a bit of local culture and flavour, Granja is an old estate in Esporlas that has been converted into a private museum.
