Historical interest: Palma

If we look as far back as prehistoric times in Majorca, there are numerous remains
from the primitive peoples that inhabited the island in the Bronze Age. The talaiots
(funeral monuments), of which there are many examples around the island, are testimony
to this. Later, a range of civilizations established colonies on the island of
Majorca: Iberians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians.
The Arab occupation lasted nearly five centuries; however, few significant
monuments remain. You can still see the Castell del Rei, near to Pollenca; a
part of the walls of Alcudia; and the Arab baths of Palma, which date from the
10th century.
The Arab domination ended with the conquest by King Jaime I who founded the
Christian kingdom of Majorca, based in Palma. The kingdom of Majorca was united
with the kingdom of Aragon in 1344, and then with Spain, which was formed by
the union of Aragon with Castilla following the accession to the throne of Fernando
of Aragon and Isabel of Castilla, the popular Reyes Catolicos. From that moment
onwards, the history of the Balearics is mixed with that of Spain.
Any historical tour should include some reference to the famous people that
have left their footprints on Majorca and contributed to the reputation of the
island as a Bohemian haunt; the famous composer Chopin was one. There are many
churches and public monuments in the Gothic style that should be visited; among
those that stand out are the cathedral and La Llotja in Palma. The most interesting
example of Renaissance architecture is the portico of San Jeronimo, also found
in the capital of Palma.
Today, Palma's port is one of the most important in the Mediterranean Sea.
The city has numerous architectural treasures, including: the 14th century Bellver
Castle, unique due to its circular foundation; the Gothic cathedral; the ancient
Llotja, or market area; the Archbishops' Palace; and the Monastery of St Francis.
It also has beautiful old mansions and manor homes built with the mercantile
fortunes amassed by the landed gentry.
