Mini guide to Puerto de Soller

Complete with a modern fishing port and two lighthouses, the compact resort of Puerto de Soller in Majorca lies about 30kms to the north of Palma. The surrounding mountains give it a natural amphitheatre and its serenity is maintained by the lack of high-rise developments.

Puerto de Soller's main attraction is its location. Framed by rugged mountains on one side and the sapphire blue Mediterranean on the other, it draws thousands of tourists every year. Although many people come here for the beaches, the narrow lanes of the old town near the harbour are also worth a visit. The beaches, although pristine, are small and can get congested.

A nice walk begins in the port area, where a few of the older buildings are situated. A number of narrow lanes meander upwards from here to the newer private developments on the hillside. However, if you follow the coast road to the other side of the harbour, you come to the main seafront road opposite Repic beach.

Shoppers are well catered for in Puerto de Soller stores, which alongside the usual souvenirs also sell leather, Lladro porcelain, pearls and pottery. The beachfront strip contains many of the resort's eateries, ranging from fast-food takeaways to expensive seafood restaurants. The nightlife in the resort, compared to some of its neighbours, is low-key and centred around one or two music bars and hotel entertainment.

Local excursions include visits to the nearby city of Soller and its Saturday market, as well as trips to the picturesque villages of Biniaraix and Fornalutx. Slightly farther afield are the beautiful Cove of Sa Calobra and the Monastery of Lluc.

Visitors arrive at Son Sant Joan International Airport, eight kilometres from Palma. From here, buses run into Palma and shuttles depart for Puerto de Soller. Most resorts around the island also run their own shuttles. Ferries run daily from Barcelona and Valencia, arriving in Palma.
