Mini guide to Salou

Salou is located in the Spanish region of Catalonia on the Costa Dorada and is the undisputed capital of this coastline - one of the Mediterranean's most popular playgrounds. It's famous for its beaches, resorts and magnificent surroundings.

The two pristine blue flag beaches of La Pineda and Platja Llevant are excellent for sunbathing and swimming and also offer many activities such as parasailing, windsurfing and boating excursions. The other principal attraction is the huge theme park, Port Aventura, which is right alongside the resort.

A wander round the city will reveal several relics that stand as testament to its rich history. A statue in the city centre of King Jaume I, who conquered the city in the 13th century, stands proud and has become a symbol of local pride. Not far from the statue is the Old Tower, built in 1530 by the Archbishop of Tarragona, Pere de Cadona. This beautiful building has been converted into a center featuring local artists.

Beyond the beautiful beach, Salou is awash in activities for vacationers including golf, tennis, cycling and horseback riding. The city also boasts great restaurants and cafés. You can find most varieties of international cuisine here as well as first class restaurants specialising in Catalan dishes with the emphasis on fresh fish, local produce and rice.

Salou is ideally placed for exploring some fascinating cities and major tourist attractions. The Salvador Dali museum at Figueres; the beautiful city of Barcelona with its fabulous Gaudi architecture; and the awe-inspiring mountain monastery at Montserrat, are all within a short drive.

Salou is serviced by the A7 highway, and also rail connections. Reus airport, which is only 15 minutes drive away, handles regular flights to and from Madrid, Barcelona and London, as well as other international destinations.
