When you visit Seville, you are in the very heart of Andalusian culture. The city's flamenco, bullfighting and nightlife are incomparable, and its atmosphere is unique and intoxicating. Seville is Andalusia's principal centre and, not surprisingly, popular with visitors. Once the seat of the Spanish crown, the city boasts fine Moorish and Iberian architecture, and a unique and intriguing historic centre.

The majority of the historic centre is comprised of narrow, winding streets, making walking the easiest mode of travel. In the midst of this maze of streets, you will find unexpected beautiful corners such as the Plaza de Santa Cruz, the square which gave its name to the district. The medieval Jewish quarter, which hides a tangle of quaint winding alleys and lovely plazas known as the Barrio de Santa Cruz, is also great for wandering.

Seville is a fascinating city in its own right, but also provides an excellent base for touring the region. Andalusia offers a wealth of attractions, many within relatively close driving distance. The region has a distinct southern Spanish character, and on leaving the city you can truly experience the older, gaucho atmosphere that continues largely unchanged here from one generation to the next. The Algarve is less than five hours drive westwards, and a daytrip to Gibraltar in the south is also interesting and popular.

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit this part of Spain. Days are warm and sunny with occasional rainfall. Summertime (June-September) is extremely hot, with virtually no rain.

Some of the city's most magnificent buildings stand as a legacy to its early Muslim influence. After the discovery of the Americas, Seville became the hub of all trade and traffic to the New World, and as a result became one of the richest cities in Spain and Europe.

Roads into Seville are all in very good condition and have low traffic density. Trains depart from Santa Justa station, a 10-minute taxi ride from the centre, and head for main destinations throughout the country, including Madrid and Barcelona. Although Seville has a well-serviced airport, the busiest airport in the region is in Malaga, so it may be easier to fly there and then get a train to Seville.
