Geography of Seville

Located 113kms inland, Seville has access to the Atlantic Ocean through the Guadalquivir
River running north to south. It is the capital of Andalusia, one of the Spanish
autonomous regions.
Andalusia can be considered a bridge between Europe and Africa, and connects
the Mediterranean with the Atlantic Ocean; it is the most southern part of Spain.
The Andalusian landscape is varied. Besides the expanded valley of the Guadalquivir
River and its tributaries, there are large forests of deciduous and cork trees
in the lower mountain ranges; snow-covered alpine high mountains; over 800kms
of coastline; the volcanic landscape of the Coto de Gata; and even a desert
close to Tabernas (Almería).
In the Sierra Morena and the Betica mountain ranges, there are numerous large
artificial lakes and catchments (for large amounts of precipitation), serving
as reservoirs for agriculture and as the water supply of the big cities.
Seville is well-located for exploring the southern region. Within a comfortable
daytrip, you can see beautiful beaches, charming mountain pueblos, wonderful
national parks and forests, and stunning historical sights, including the world
famous Alhambra palace in Granada. The beaches of Portugal can be easily reached
within four hours, and the vibrant Costa del Sol is just three hours by train.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit this part of Spain. Days are
warm and sunny with occasional rainfall. Summertime (June - September) can be
very hot with virtually no rain. Average daily temperatures can reach a high
of 40C in July and August. Winter brings cooler yet mild temperatures, with
sunny and clear days mixed with overcast days.
