What to see by foot: Tenerife - Canary Islands

In recent years, Tenerife has become, among walkers, the most popular of all the Canary Islands. And for good reason - the island has terrain for every skill and fitness level. There are country lanes for strolling, nature trails for hiking, and mountains to be scaled - including El Teide, the highest in all Spain. The profusion of wild plants and flowers makes the island a botanical treasure.

Tenerife offers great and varied hiking terrain for all levels of expertise, with some of the best trails being in and around the national park, and of course, Mount Teide itself. Other areas of note are: the Orotava Valley, with its ancient forests, and the mountainous regions of Teno in the northwest and Anaga in the northeast.

Puerto de la Cruz and the Orotava Valley make the best bases from which to explore the various hiking trails, but it is possible to find trails wherever you are on the island.

A great daytrip from Tenerife is to the 'hiker's paradise' island of La Gomera. You can take a ferry trip from the port of Los Cristianos on Tenerife to San Sebastián, the capital of La Gomera. The journey takes around an hour and is a pleasant trip in itself, offering passengers the chance to see dolphins and flying fish along the way. The upper part of the island (from 800m and higher) is a national park containing a misty forest called Laurisilva, which has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
