What to see by car: Tenerife - Canary Islands

Despite its reputation as the UK's number one budget winter sun destination, there is much more to Tenerife than sun, sea and sand. Away from the beaches, Tenerife has a remarkable countryside, with mountainous rainforests, inland deserts, stunning coastal scenery and quaint rural villages.

The Cliffs of the Giants (Acantilados de los Gigantes), located a quarter of the way down the west coast of Tenerife, are remarkable sheer rock walls that plunge into the ocean. Despite its great beauty, the panoramic Anaga Mountain region is still relatively unexplored and contains several rural villages. The Parque Nacional de las Canadas del Teide includes an enormous volcanic crater 48kms in circumference, out of which rises Mount Teide (Spain's highest peak).

The ethnographic park, Piramides de Guimar, contains the rare stone pyramids whose disputed origins resemble those of similar ones found in Peru. Alternatively, Villa de la Orotava lies in a banana plantation valley, and boasts interesting old architecture. In the Orotava Mountains there are hiking paths - some of which reach the great Canadas del Teide, a protected national park area.

Los Cristianos, once a fishing village, is one of the most popular resorts in the Canary Islands. The most popular beaches include: Playa de Las Teresitas, Playa San Marcos, and the well-developed glitzy Playa de Las Americas. Lago Martianez is a good freshwater alternative.
