What to see by foot: Torremolinos

Torremolinos is really three places in one: the main town in the middle on the Malaga side, the modern Bajondillo and Playamar areas on the other side, and the older La Carihuela. A stroll by day reveals a lively promenade overlooking the clean, sandy beach. Vestiges of the original fishing village can be discerned in La Carihuela.

The seafront promenade, Paseo Maritimo, extends east to Playamar and west to La Carihuela, now continuing as far as Benalmadena Marina. The area is distinguished by its many beach bars, known locally as chiringuitos. Many of these are really good fish restaurants and there are a few notable music bars among them. You can walk along the paseo at almost any time of the day or night and find something to eat or drink.

The walk to La Carihuela offers pleasant sea views and some dramatic rock formations. Farther along is the old fishing village of La Carihuela, which is a delightful area of simple, picturesque houses and bougainvillea-clad patios where old men play dominoes and drink anis.

The town centre features the famous shopping street of Calle San Miguel which winds down from the main street, almost to the seafront. It provides a glimpse of the old Torremolinos as a small fishing village, and is worth the walk.
There are plenty of beachfront cafés selling fried fish, snacks and refreshments, which is just as well, as the walk back from the main beach into the town centre is uphill all the way. When the sun goes down, the town is just as lively. There are bars in abundance proclaiming their connection with one nationality or another: Irish, English, Dutch or German - you name it and Torremolinos is likely to have it.
