What to see by car: Torremolinos

While you're in the area, sample some culture by heading northeast to the historic town of Granada. The number one attraction is the Alhambra, a huge castle with beautiful gardens and fine palaces boasting opulent furnishings. This great Moorish structure affords a spectacular view of the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range.

On the hill opposite the Alhambra is the old Arabic quarter, Albaicin, with its stone cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. The whole area is an oil painter's paradise, and there is an attractive view at almost every turn of the head.

To the west of Torremolinos is Ronda, which never fails to attract visitors with its dramatic setting poised above a deep gorge ringed by mountains. The best view of the gorge is from the New Bridge. Old Ronda is a charming, classic Andalusian town which can be enjoyed simply for its Moorish remains and pretty white houses.

Many come here to pay homage to the second-oldest bullring in Spain, along with the attached Museum of Bullfighting which celebrates Ronda's matador hero, Pedro Romero, one of the founding fathers of tauromachy. The Cueva de la Pilata, just outside Ronda, contains Bronze Age fish and bison paintings.
For some excellent tax-free shopping, head to Gibraltar which is within a 2-hour drive of Torremolinos. Apart from the famous Rock, the system of caves, Barbary apes and spectacular views, Gibraltar is steeped in history, and there is much to see, from the remains of British fortifications to marinas and beaches. Popular water sports include: sailing, scuba diving and dolphin watching.

The Moorish Castle and Tower of Homage dating back to 1160 AD bear the scars from centuries of conflict, and the structure dominates the hillside from the landward approach to the Rock. Gibraltar's principal shopping thoroughfare runs almost the length of town along Main Street, and most shops have windows packed with goods of all kinds at attractive tax-free prices.
