Geography of Valencia

The Mediterranean climate has helped to make Valencia the 'garden of Spain'.
Along with exploring the city itself, the area surrounding Valencia gives visitors
a chance to enjoy the wide variety of natural surroundings: endless beaches,
hidden coves, marshlands, rice paddies, salt flats, Mediterranean forests, and
deep ravines and gorges sculpted by mountain streams.
The region boasts 12 protected nature preserves which include unique Mediterranean
flora and fauna. The nearby mountains also provide ample opportunities for climbing,
hiking and bike riding. With such a diverse landscape and a mild sunny climate,
the numerous nautical and mountain activities add to Valencia's enticement.
This coastal region surrounding Valencia extends from Vinaros and the Gulf
of Valencia to beyond Denia. The region has expansive beaches around Benicossim,
but its most outstanding feature is, perhaps, the medieval fortress town of
Peniscola, a dramatic sight when viewed from a distance.
Other places of interest are the ruined castle of Chisvert, inland from Peniscola;
the 16th century Torre del Rey at Oropesa; and the Carmelite monastery at the
Desierto de las Palmas. North of Valencia is the attractive provincial capital
of Castellon de la Plana, which is situated on a fertile plain and is the centre
of a thriving trade in citrus fruits. Other fruits, along with rice, vegetables,
cereals, olive oil and wine are also produced in the region. Many of these products
(especially Valencia oranges) are exported.
