What to see by car: Valencia

Situated 12kms south of Valencia, separated from the waters of the Mediterranean by a chain of dunes and pine groves, lies the freshwater lake of La Albufera. This body of water was formed in the distant past from the deposit of sediments from the Rivers Turia an Jucar, which hemmed in this small inland sea of fresh water.

All those who enjoy being in nature should visit La Albufera and the surrounding nature reserve. Here you can watch about 250 different kinds of birds as well as herons, ducks and flamingos nesting and breeding here. A boat trip on the lake is a real experience if you take a 'barquita' (typical wooden boat).

One of the loveliest villages near Valencia is El Palmar, a typical fishing village with a long tradition. Fish and eel that come from this area can even be found in the market halls of Valencia. The old reed fishermen houses are especially picturesque; and today they are used as expensive summer houses for people coming here for the weekend. In El Palmar, there is also a little museum giving information about the flora and fauna of the natural preserve Albufera open Tuesday to Thursday, 12:00 to 14:00.

The area stretching north from Valencia city is also home to the historic Roman town of Sagunto, which includes a Roman theatre and castle, as well as a modern beach resort suburb. Nearby Benicasm is another attractive beach resort town. The interior includes the lovely university town of Castellon de la Plana, the enchanting towns of Morella and Mirambel, and the Neanderthal site at Jativa.

The towns of Altea and Javia boast interesting old quarters; and Alicante is a charming place. Stroll along the white sandy beaches and visit the 16th century Castillo de Santa Barbara which overlooks the town. Torrevieja is the cultural heart of the Costa Blanca. It is a vibrant town and port in the southern part of the Valencian community, and is surrounded by two large natural lagoons which form the well known Salterns of Torrevieja - considered the biggest in Europe.
