Travelling to Gothenburg
 
If you're driving, both Malmö and Helsingborg, on the west coast, are accessible
by the E6 north. Gothenburg is 278kms north of Malmö and 227kms north of
Helsingborg. From Stockholm, take the E4 west to Jonköping and continue west
the rest of the way through Borås to Gothenburg, a distance of 470kms.
Trains in Sweden are comfortable and convenient. The Oslo-Copenhagen express
train runs through Gothenburg and Helsingborg. Trains run frequently on a north-south
route from Gothenburg to Helsingborg and Malmö in the south. The Gothenburg
to Stockholm route is the most used line, with trains leaving hourly in both
directions.
If you are travelling by bus, you'll find that there are several daily buses
to Gothenburg from Helsingborg and Malmö. The trip takes about 3 hours,
30 minutes from Helsingborg and 4 hours, 30 minutes from Malmö. Several
buses connect Stockholm and Gothenburg daily; the trip takes seven to eight
hours. Gothenburg's bus station at Nils Ericson Gate is located behind the railway
station.
SAS operates eight to 10 flights from Copenhagen to Gothenburg daily. For Swedes
who live in the west, departure from Copenhagen may be more convenient than
from Stockholm. SAS also operates 10 to 20 daily flights between Stockholm and
Gothenburg.
Landvetter Airport is located 26kms east of Gothenburg. An airport bus departs
every 30 minutes to the central bus terminal in Gothenburg, just behind main
railway station. Buses run daily between 05:00 and 23:15.
You can arrive in Gothenburg by ferry from North Jutland. Stena Line has six
crossings per day in summer. The trip takes about three hours, and the ferry
is both comfortable and modern. Twice a week, Stena has a ferry service running
from Harwich (England) to Gothenburg, taking 24 hours. From June to mid-August,
there's also service from Newcastle-upon-Tyne (England) to Gothenburg once a
week, also taking 24 hours. This service is operated by Scandinavian Seaways.
