What to see by foot: Gothenburg
 
Sweden's second-largest city, Gothenburg, is ostensibly the country's most endearing
place to live. Situated on the west coast, it is home to a magnificent harbour
and labyrinthine stretches of canals and streets, and is filled with verdant woodland
and flower gardens. The city also boasts many interesting museums and a massive
amusement park.
The Stadtsmuseum, situated in the former site of the headquarters of the Swedish
East India Company, includes an extensive collection of porcelain and a fantastic
Viking ship. Visit the nearby Maritima Centrum, where you can roam around on
board the destroyer and submarine moored at the quayside.
Easily the best place to see art in Gothenburg is Göteborgs Konstmuseum,
which is home to collections of paintings by artists such as Van Gogh and Picasso.
Some lesser known but extraordinary works by Swedish artists are also located
in the gallery. Additionally, there's work by Francis Bacon in the modern section
of the museum.
Alternatively, if the walls of museums are becoming somewhat claustrophobic,
then head outdoors to Botaniska Trädgården (Botanical Garden), on
Carl Skottsbergsgata 22A. The gardens are gloriously opulent with multicoloured
flower arrangements, while the landscaping is of picture book quality.
Liseberg, in Korsvagen, is said to be one the world's greatest amusement parks.
Packed with Swedes on daytrips, the park is home to such attractions as Spaceport
Liseberg, which dominates the park at a height of 150m. Other attractions include
a spooky ghost house, and a simulated white water trip through the turbulent
rapids in the north of Sweden.
A stroll down Kungsportsavenyn (The Avenue) is a Gothenburg tradition. In the
grip of the freezing winter, the street is heated by underground pipes that
keep it clear of snow. Kungsportsavenyn is always frantically animated with
a rush of people visiting the many cafés.
