What to see by car: Gothenburg
 
It's worth taking the time to explore the surrounding countryside. The natural,
undisturbed resources of the area are synonymous with Sweden, and you can see
much of the country's vaunted beauty within a day.
From Gothenburg's centre, drive out to the Bohuslän Coast or head south
to Halland, the Swedish Riviera. It is advisable to take these trips in the
summer and autumn months, as the wintry winds are fierce and uncompromising.
Just north of Gothenburg lies Bohuslän, a natural wonder with sinuous
waterways snaking around an abundance of islands. Inland, the countryside consists
of wilderness areas, forests, mountains and lakes, so it's not surprising that
hordes of people visit the area for outdoor adventure. Fishing, canoeing, climbing
and camping are just a few of the activities on offer. Driving to the coast,
you follow the E6 motorway north from Gothenburg.
South of Gothenburg, you'll find the white sandy beaches of Halland, the fastest-growing
tourist district in the country. These days Halland enjoys a thriving tourist
scene, especially in summer.
Windsurfing, along with other water sports, is popular here. Mellbystrand,
Tylös, Ringenäs and Skrea are some of the best beaches for water-based
activities. The area is also perfect for camping and fishing, as the lakes are
resplendent with flowers and plants, and copious amounts of salmon inhabit the
waters, along with many other kinds of fish.
East of Gothenburg is Vadstena, one of the most pleasant towns in Sweden and,
with its network of well maintained and traffic-free roads, easily accessed
by car. The imposing Renaissance castle of Vadstena Slot looks straight over
the harbour and lake beyond. The castle was an ambitious family project of the
early Vasa kings; it houses, in the upper apartments, some items of period furniture
and paintings, including a Van Dyck.
