Mini guide to Stockholm

Stockholm is without a doubt one of the most beautiful capital cities in Europe,
if not the world. Its many islands perch majestically in the crystal blue Baltic
waters, and its classical and medieval buildings blend seamlessly with the modern
trappings of a vibrant, artistic and culturally diverse metropolis.
To get a taste of old Stockholm, walk around the scenic Gamla Stan (old town).
Situated on an island, it has many narrow streets and important buildings to
explore. Highlights include the Museum of Medieval Stockholm and the Parliament.
Also interesting is the Great Square, where 82 Swedish nobles were beheaded
in one day in 1520. The sumptuous Royal Palace, where the royal family still
reside, is worth seeing too.
Nearby Vaxholm is the chief gateway to the archipelago of islands around Stockholm,
and is very popular with tourists. With many ancient buildings, clusters of
summerhouses, plenty of water and the well-placed Vaxholm castle, the town is
a delightful place to visit, especially during summer.
Stockholm was founded in the mid-13th century and struggled for centuries to
break free from Danish rule before finally achieving independence in 1523. It
became the capital of Sweden in 1634. The city survived a great plague in 1711.
It continued to prosper in the 20th century, hosting the Olympics in 1912, and
more recently seeing a huge increase in tourism.
The archipelago around Stockholm has between 14,000 and 100,000 islands nestled
in the clear blue Baltic water. Despite its northern location, Stockholm has
a surprisingly mild climate with over nine hours of sunshine a day from May
to July.
The city's Arlanda International Airport is 42kms north of the city and mostly
services regional and European flights. Stockholm is a rail hub for Sweden's
SJ national service, and trains run from the Central stationen to Copenhagen
and Oslo. Buses run regularly from the City terminalen across Sweden and Scandinavia.
Helsinki can be reached by ferry.
