Geography of Stockholm

The archipelago around Stockholm has between 14,000 and 100,000 islands nestled
in the clear blue Baltic water. Each one of the many inhabited islands has its
own character, both geologically and through its history and traditions.
Sandhamn, with its many summerhouses and spas, is popular among wealthy sailors
and is best visited on a daytrip (1 hour, 30 minutes from Vaxholm). Nearby,
Finnhamn is quieter, but you have to book in advance to stay in the limited
accommodation.
Swedes are outdoors people and Stockholm's location is perfect for exploring
this environmentally-friendly country's pristine wilderness. The archipelago's
islands are ideal for sailing around and exploring by boat; many of them have
campsites and are havens for sea birds and other marine wildlife. Away from
the islands, and west and north of Stockholm, are a number of forests, which
offer hiking trails and campsites.
Despite its northern location, Stockholm has a surprisingly mild climate, although
snow in winter is common. Fortunately, the city is sheltered from the harsh
weather systems coming from the Atlantic. In the summer, it receives warm pressure
from continental Russia, giving it over nine hours of sunshine a day, from May
to July.
