What to see by foot: Stockholm

Stockholm is a haven for walkers, and this is particularly true of the Gamla
Stan (Old Town), which is confined to its own island.
The tour begins at Gustav Adolfs Torg, where King Gustavus III was assassinated
at a masked ball in 1792. From here, walk across the North Bridge past the Swedish
Parliament, which is only open to guided tours. Also, just over the bridge is
the Museum of Medieval Stockholm, containing artefacts and objects from this
period as well as part of the old city wall.
Continue into the Gamla Stan until you come to the Riddarhuset, which is where
the Swedish aristocracy met during the Parliament of 1665-68. Continue past
this building on to the small island of Riddarhomen, which is linked by bridge
to the Gamla Stan. The church is the major draw on this small island, containing
the tombs of four centuries of Swedish kings.
After a tour of the church, you can cross back into the Gamla Stan and into
the Great Square. Here you can imagine the scene which greeted visitors in 1520
when Christian II of Denmark beheaded 82 Swedish noblemen and displayed their
heads in a pyramid on the square. Nowadays it is home to the Swedish Stock Exchange
where the Nobel Prize for literature is awarded every year.
Other sights to see in the Gamla Stan include the Royal Palace, which dates
from the mid-18th century and hosts a changing of the guard ceremony. Storkyrkan
church, dating from the mid-1200s has been witness to numerous royal weddings
and coronations; it is a worthy stop, if just to see the famous 15th century
statue of George slaying the dragon. For a real flavour of the past, stroll
down Stora Hoparegrand, which is one of the dankest, darkest and narrow streets
in the old town, with buildings dating from the 1600s.
