What to see by car: Stockholm

Although it is sometimes called the 'Venice of the North', Stockholm allows
cars to enter. However, as in Stockholm's Italian counterpart, cars are often
impractical due to the amount of water dissecting the city. However, there are
many interesting place outside the city which are accessible by car.
Vaxholm is the chief gateway to the archipelago of islands around Stockholm,
and is very popular with tourists. With many ancient buildings, clusters of
summerhouses, plenty of water and the well-placed Vaxholm castle, the town is
a delightful place to visit, especially during summer.
Nearby Sigtuna is arguably Sweden's oldest surviving town, and it contains
ruins that date back to its founding as a mining town a thousand years ago,
during the age of the Vikings. The town is a pleasant daytrip from Stockholm
and has several well-preserved runic inscriptions, as well as some notable museums.
Nynshamn is a busy spa town that has origins as a humble fishing village. The
Nynshamn Folklore Museum gives good insight into Swedish folklore, and the ferry
for the island of Gotland leaves from this area.
The greater Stockholm area is comprised of more than 10,000 islands, which
add to the appeal of this unique city. Most of them are tiny, yet there are
some lovely places to visit by ferry; in summer, the locals love to decamp to
their weekend cottages dotted among the many inlets and bays. Several ferry
companies run fixed-route or tour rides to various public points. Sandhamn is
popular among wealthy sailors and is best seen on a daytrip (1 hour, 30 minutes
from Vaxholm). Finnhamn Island is much quieter and is the place to go to escape
from modern life.
