What to see by foot: Geneva

Geneva's old town sits atop a hill over the Rhône River. It is home to
a collection of cobbled lanes clustered around the imposing Cathedral St Pierre,
with its Romanesque and Baroque styles. The nearby Place du Bourg-de-Four is
the oldest square in Geneva and has evolved into a marketplace.
Geneva boasts a number of good museums, including: the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Museums; the critically acclaimed Museum of Art and History; the Horology (clocks)
Museum; and the Voltaire Museum. The Petit Palais is also worth visiting.
Many lovely parks and bathing areas are found along the shoreline, and a stroll
along the waterfront gives good views of the Jet d' Eau, a giant single jet
fountain in the middle of the bay. Boat trips are also a popular way to admire
the Alps.
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the birthplace of
the internet and features a 27-kilometre wide circular particle accelerator
and the world's largest magnet.
Carouge, a suburb of Geneva, is a historic European town dating from the 18th
century, when it was built by the king of Sardinia to rival Geneva. Once Carouge
was the playground of smugglers and gold washers who panned for the precious
metal in the Arve. Carouge is a national landmark thanks to its architecture.
Begin your exploration in the Market Square, which features an old fountain
and markets. The town also boasts: the court of the Count of Veyrier's palace,
dating from 1783; Place du Temple, with a fountain from 1857; and a Louis XVI
carved door.
Byron and Shelley both lived in the residential suburb of Cologny, just nine
miles northeast of Geneva. The view of the lake and the city is especially delightful
from the Byron Stone on Chemin de Ruth (Ruth's Path) leading to the Byron fields.
