What to see by car: Geneva
    
Travelling through Switzerland by car is easy and the scenery is breathtaking.
Geneva is in the middle of Europe's most spectacular scenery. Lake Geneva, the
Jura and the Alps are all within driving distance and make for great daytrips.
It doesn't take much time to escape the city and find yourself frolicking among
hills and meadows of edelweiss. The drive along the lake is especially lovely.
Daytrips can include a ferry ride on Lake Geneva (from Geneva to Lausanne),
a tour of one of the 21 castles on the lake or a hike through the nearby wine
region with stops for samples along the way (follow one of the clearly marked
vineyard routes).
Mont Salève (House Mountain) is four miles south of Geneva, in France.
Its peak is at 1,200m. You can drive up the mountain, which is popular with
rock climbers. From the top, you'll have a panoramic sweep of the Valley of
the Arve, with Geneva and Mont Blanc in the background.
Chillon Castle receives more visitors than any other historic building in Switzerland
due to its serene lakeside location and well-preserved 11th century ramparts,
tower, courtyards, dungeons and numerous rooms. The castle is located within
walking distance of Montreux, which is the centrepiece of the Swiss Riviera
and known for its annual jazz festival. The hour-long lakeside drive to Montreux
is particularly rewarding.
Lausanne enjoys a lovely setting on the shoreline of Lake Geneva and has a
thriving arts scene coupled with a laid-back atmosphere. People flock here in
the summer to idly wander around the quaint former fishing village of Ouchy,
and the stylish cobbled shopping streets of Lace St-Francois. The city is now
famous for hosting the International Olympic Committee.
Worth a visit, Château de Coppet sits on a hill beside Lake Geneva, between
Lausanne and Geneva. It was purchased in 1784 by Jacques Necker, the rich and
powerful finance minister of Louis XVI, and today displays its wealthy collection
to the public.
