Geography of Zurich

Zürich lies at the end of Lake Zürich, which is 27kms long and up
to 4kms wide in some parts. The city is nestled in an open valley which extends
from the southeast to the northwest. The valley is bordered on the west by the
Uetliberg (871 m) and on the east by the Zürichberg (676 m) and the Käferberg
mountains (578 m). Zürich has two rivers: the Limmat which flows out of
Lake Zürich and the Sihl which flows into the Limmat below the main train
station.
Zürich covers an area of 91.9 square kms. Its maximum length from north
to south is 12.7kms and from east to west is 13.4kms. The city is divided into
12 districts called Stadtkreise.
The greater Zürich area covers a large portion of the eastern Mittelland
zone as well as part of the area that borders southwest Germany. Several Swiss
cantons belong in this zone from an economic perspective: Zürich situated
in the centre, Argovia and Solothurn to the west, Zug and Schwyz to the south,
Glarus and Grisons to the southeast, Thurgovia and St Gall to the east and Schaffhausen
to the north.
