What to see by foot: Zurich

Zürich is safe to walk around at all hours and is an exciting city to
explore on foot. The Bahnhofstrasse was built on the site of the city walls
which were torn down 150 years ago. Underneath are bank vaults full of gold
and silver. You aren't allowed into the vaults but the famous street's large
department stores and speciality shops are happy to let you view their goods.
Buerkliplatz Flohmarkt is a flea market and the perfect place to hunt for a
Swiss cuckoo clock souvenir. The stalls offer a range of goods, mostly antiques.
If shopping makes you hungry, the variety of food stalls on offer will keep
you going.
The Fraumünster Church, dating from the 13th century, is known for its
distinctive stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall in 1970. Those familiar
with Chagall's art will understand why they are one of the highlights of Zürich.
The Museum of Fine Arts is brimming with 19th and 20th century art; including
pieces by Dali, Arp, Man Ray, Bacon, Cézanne, Renoir, Hockney, Manet,
Monet and Gauguin. There's also a fair number of Picassos, a room devoted to
Marc Chagall, and an Edvard Munch collection.
The Swiss Museum is set in an imitation castle and the permanent collection
there gives the ultimate rundown on Swiss life and times from the prehistoric
era to the present. The museum boasts a good selection of church art, weapons,
coins, costumes and utensils. The fresco in the Hall of Arms, Retreat of the
Swiss Confederates at Marignano, is by Ferdinand Hodler. In the basement there's
an interesting section on book-inscribing in the Middle Ages.
