Skanes, Tunisia offers brilliant beaches and fine accommodation. The city is in
close proximity to Monastir, where tradition and modernity blend into a unique
atmosphere. Whether your idea of a holiday is soaking in the sun or taking in
a bit of culture, Skanes is an ideal place.
Skanes is a beach resort with clear blue waters, powdery sand and everything
else you'd expect out of a postcard resort. Beachside activities include: sailing,
windsurfing and scuba diving. The Flamingo (only ten minutes away) and Palm
Links (in Skanes) are top quality golf clubs; tourists are welcome and should
call ahead for a tee time.
Skanes is built in Tunisian style with outstanding modern facilities. Most
resorts here boast amenities such as: sauna, massage, tennis courts, swimming
pools, restaurants and discotheques. Skanes is a suburb of Monastir, and a short
taxi ride will have you downtown at the bazaars, wandering through the historic
medina of the country's holiest city, or having a cool drink as you take in
the modern marina.
Near to the site of what was once the Roman city of Ruspina, the Ribat features
some remarkable architecture. Many movies have been filmed here, including:
Raiders of the Lost Ark and Life of Brian. Within the Ribat, the Museum of Islamic
Arts has an excellent collection of manuscripts, pottery and textiles from different
periods of antiquity. The Bourguiba Mosque and golden-domed mausoleum were built
as tribute to the former president and are certainly worth a look.
Camel caravan excursions can be arranged, and for a special evening of Tunisian
culture, try a Bedouin feast. Possible daytrips include travel to Sousse; El
Djem, home of a well preserved Roman amphitheatre; and Mahdia, with its charming
façade covering a wild history.
To reach Skanes, you must first get to Monastir, which is directly served from
all major Tunisian cities by bus and train. Monastir also has an airport just
a few minutes from town.
