Mini guide to Antalya
Antalya is a true four-season destination. It features a mild climate showcasing
azure Mediterranean waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks, and is Turkey's principal
holiday resort.
Antalya offers visitors the unique opportunity to ski in the mountains and
swim in the sea, in the same day. In addition to the city's natural attractions,
some well-preserved historical sites introduce you to its long history. The
Hadrian Arch and Clock Tower, both built within the city walls, date back to
the Hellenistic era. The Kesik ('broken') Minaret was once a Byzantine church
which was long ago converted into a mosque. The museum contains an impressive
collection of artefacts which showcase the rich history of the city.
Antalya's historical quarter has been revamped, and what was once a quaint
fishing village has become a cosmopolitan town. A walk around Kaleici provides
nice views of the attractive port marina and classic Turkish and Greek houses.
Byzantine, Roman and Seljuk architecture can still be seen throughout the old
town as well.
Leisure options in Antalya include: swimming, skiing, waterskiing, windsurfing,
yacht cruises, aqua parks and rafting. The more daring can try dirt-biking or
trekking in the Lake District or around the imposing Taurus mountains, which
at around 3,000m provide unbelievable panoramas. For city interests, head again
to Kaleici where the greatest concentration of restaurants, shopping and entertainment
venues offers great evening options.
Nearby Aspendos is renowned for its well-preserved 2nd century riverside theatre
which still hosts major performances today. Perge, 18kms east of Antalya along
the coast, is also an important city. Situated on the site of ancient Pamphylia,
it features interesting remains of a theatre and city gate.
Antalya has an international airport just 10kms east of the city centre, and
modern bus and rail stations connect Antalya to the rest of Turkey and other
European cities. Alternatively, the Antalya-Venice ferry is dependable and runs
frequently.
