Hotels in Bodrum
What to see by foot: Bodrum
Bodrum is a thriving port town that encapsulates the best of both worlds. The
town is laid-back by day, with a host of historical and leisure attractions
on offer, while at night it is buzzing - alive with bars, cafés and party-goers.
Bodrum is dominated by the medieval Saint Peter's Cathedral, which stands imposingly
between the town's two harbours. The cathedral was constructed as a symbol of
Christian Europe unified against the invading Ottoman forces. The base is a
massive 9,144 square metres and is surrounded by turrets, magnificent sunken
gardens and battlement walls bearing no less than 249 coats of arms.
Used as a prison during the Ottoman period, Bodrum's castle presently houses
an excellent museum of underwater archaeology containing fascinating and revealing
remains unearthed from shipwrecks in the area, as well as other interesting
artefacts.
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, a monumental 49m tomb which stood above the
city for centuries, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today,
its crumbling remains are a withered shadow of its original grandeur after earthquakes
shattered its columns and sent its stone chariot crashing to the ground.
A visit to Bodrum would not be complete without a tour of at least one or more
of its colourful, bustling markets. With their rich visual appeal, pungent aromas
and cacophony of sounds, they are a delicious assault on the senses and should
not to be missed.
Thursday and Friday are reserved for the food market, with everything from
locally grown citrus fruits to wild herbs and bulbous mushrooms. The textile
market, a delightful collage of plush textures, brilliant hues and woven patterns,
is on Tuesday.
Simply wandering through the streets of Bodrum and soaking up the atmosphere
is entertainment enough. You might happen to stumble into one of the small art
galleries which have given Bodrum its reputation as a Bohemian, creative centre;
or, you may prefer to linger at a roadside café and strike up a conversation
with one of the many friendly locals.
