Hotels Bodrum
What to see by car: Bodrum
The Bodrum peninsula is blessed with a multitude of fine, white beaches, crystal
waters and immense scenic beauty. Akyalar, approximately 10kms from Bodrum,
is known for its powdery sand, good camping areas and fantastic windsurfing.
The Greek Aegean Islands lie just across the ocean and are the focal point of
a memorable view.
Bitez, only 6kms away from the city, has a wonderfully peaceful beach and a
pleasant promenade lined with cafés and restaurants. Windsurfing is popular
here, as are dinghy sailing and sailboarding. Beyond the beach are stretches
of tranquil and aromatic citrus orchards, wonderful to stroll through in the
lazy afternoon stillness.
Ortakent is renowned for its pristine beach and its citrus orchards stretching
down to the sea. It is also home to several ancient tower-houses that were built
for defensive purposes and have fortress-like exteriors. The oldest of these
is Mustafa Pasa House, dating back as far as 1601. Over a small hill on the
western end of the beach lies Kargi Cove, which is smaller and quieter than
Ortakent.
Torba, a charming little village situated on a small bay, has a combination
of pebbly and sandy beaches. One of the points of historical interest here is
a round structure, probably a tomb, built over 2,500 years ago by the Lelegians.
There are also ruins of a Byzantine monastery on the east side of the bay.
For those prepared to venture farther, Ephesus and Pamukkale are both wonderful
destinations to visit on an overnight trip. Ephesus, which lies 160kms from
Bodrum, is an ancient city and the site of a number of excavations which have
supplied valuable information about how towns were structured in ages past.
Pamukkale is an enchanting and spectacular phenomenon of white, petrified cascades
made by limestone-rich thermal springs, used since Roman times for their healing
powers.
