Fethiye Hotels
Mini guide to Fethiye
Fethiye has become a major holiday destination on Turkey's Mediterranean coast,
and with a post-earthquake revamping has now received a facelift. With many historical
sights, including the Amyntas Tomb, and a plethora of surrounding postcard-worthy
daytrip options, Fethiye has plenty to offer.
The Amyntas Tomb is one of best preserved ruins of the Ancient Lycian city
of Telmessos, upon which Fethiye was built. Only seven kilometres from town,
the ghost village of Kaya (Levissi), where a Greek village was displaced in
1923, makes for an extraordinary daytrip. A medieval fortress, located on the
hill near the harbour is also worth a look.
Fethiye town is a nice civic complement to the surrounding natural beauty,
and has many charismatic streets to explore. Wander around the maze of cobbled
streets in the old town to see village life in action. Some nice deals can be
found on carpets, leather and handicrafts, and the weekly Tuesday market is
recommended. Views of the surrounding hills show the devastating effects of
the recent earthquake.
Especially notable are the many restaurants of Fethiye. Near the harbour, many
street-side seafood restaurants serve up the catch of the day. Alternatively,
try the recommended Pasa Kebap restaurant for some delicious home-cooked stews.
Pizza 74 serves some nice slices, while Birik Lokanta is the place to try some
Turkish cuisine. After dinner, check out Paspartu Sok road for some Turkish
music or nightlife.
Perhaps Turkey's most stunning sight, the lagoon of Olu Deniz is only 20 minutes
drive from Fethiye. The psychedelic shades of blue and green are surreal and
are sure to spark a sublime feeling in even the most hardened tourist. The nearby
beaches have some impressive cliffs, making for a scenic day at the beach.
Fethiye is an easy 40-kilometre drive from Dalaman Airport. Flights connect
here from Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara and Antalya year round. Although there are
more flights into Antalya Airport, the drive to Fethiye takes at least four
hours. There is a shuttle bus to Fethiye from Dalaman Airport, or you can catch
a local bus outside the airport entrance into Dalaman, and then another bus
to Fethiye. A taxi from the airport directly into Fethiye takes about 45 minutes.
