Travelling to Istanbul
    
Istanbul is conveniently located in northwestern Turkey, with all the transport
services that Europe possesses within close proximity.
The E-80, E-90 and Trans European Motorway (TEM) are the three main roads leading
to Turkey from European borders. The main motorway from the Turkish border at
Edirne straight through to Istanbul, Ankara and beyond is the E-80, closely
paralleled by the somewhat smaller D-100. The route to Antalya follows the E-80
to Izmit and then heads south on the D-650.
Trains come from many far off places such as Munich and Vienna, with transfers
in Sofia, Belgrade, Bucharest and Budapest, arriving in Sirkeci Station (on
the tramway to Sultanahmet). Haydarpasa Station on the Asian side is the end
of the line for trains arriving from Anatolia; there's a ferry landing just
outside the station with services to Eminönü, Yenikapi, Avcilar and
Bakirköy.
The International Istanbul bus terminal serves all international and domestic
lines and is located in Esenler, about 10kms from the city centre. Most of the
major intercity companies have free service buses to and from central Istanbul
from the bus station. These shuttle services leave several hours before the
scheduled departure time of the coach.
Istanbul's new and modern Atatürk International Airport, next to the old
and outdated airport (now serving domestic flights), is located 15kms to the
west of the city centre. The best way to get to the city centre from the airport
is by taxi. A taxi into Sultanahmet should cost around $8 and a ride into Taksim
is around $11.
Alternatively, Havas operates a shuttle bus every 30 minutes from just outside
the airport exit to both the Aksaray and Taksim neighbourhoods. The fare is
about $2 and the ride takes approximately 30 minutes; however, it's still a
short taxi ride from the drop-off point to your hotel.
