What to see by car: Istanbul

The much-touted Pierre Loti café, in the very religious district of Eyüp,
is located about eight kilometres from Sultanahmet. The stunning view over the
Golden Horn is its most attractive feature, and the walk down through the old
Ottoman cemetery to the village is also delightful.
Only really accessible by car along the Beykos highway and little more than
an intersection in the road, the village of Polonezköy has been designated
as a national park. The bucolic setting, home to several restored Polish houses
set on an exquisite expanse of rolling hills, makes this a fashionable weekend
getaway destination for residents of Istanbul or foreigners with a bit of spare
time.
This forested retreat is a perfect place to spend a weekend outdoors. A nature
lover's path runs from near the Adampol Hotel through the woods. You can also
wander around town and negotiate the hire of a pony for an enjoyable, if not
authentic, pastoral experience.
Located 38kms southeast of Istanbul, Termal is a natural hot spring, famous
as a spa since Roman times. The main complex has an historic Turkish bath, an
outdoor swimming pool, private rooms and several hotels and restaurants. The
cost of one day of combined use of the pool and Turkish bath is approximately
US$5, and the spa is open daily.
A bit farther out to the south is Bursa, known as the 'green city'. It occupies
the verdant northern slopes of Uludag, an extinct volcanic peak which is Turkey's
chief winter sports centre. The thermal springs in the suburb of Çekirge
have been popular since the 16th century. The town includes masterpieces of
early Ottoman architecture such as the Grand Mosque, and its colourful bazaar
is one of the largest in Turkey.
