Geography of Aberdeen

Aberdeen, located in the north east of Scotland, lies on the North Sea and has
one of the most distinctive landscapes in Scotland, primarily due to the silver
granite that can be found here and is quarried locally. In the 18th century,
the granite was used to build the city, creating glittering spires, parapets
and columns that shimmer in the sunlight. Because of its location, Aberdeen
also boasts one of the finest stretches of sandy shoreline in Scotland.
The city lies between two rivers, the Don in the north and the Dee to the south.
This is where the city gets its name from: 'aber' meaning mouth of and thus
Aberdeen, the mouth of the Dee. The city is backed by a fertile hinterland and
facing the North Sea. It still remains one of the major fishing ports in the
north and the finding of oil in the 1970s has brought wealth to the city, as
a hub for the North Sea oil industry.
