Historical interest: Aberdeen

Aberdeen has a long history as a maritime city, going back to its foundations
as a Royal burgh in 1124. Historically, Aberdeen has had strong trading ties
with Scandinavia across the North Sea. In the past, clipper ships built in Aberdeen
brought goods from the Orient and until after WW II, fishing and shipping were
the main industries of Aberdeen. The finding of oil in the North Sea in the
1970s changed Aberdeen from a fishing town to a major hub for North Sea oil
exploration, bringing with it the wealth of the industry.
In the 14th century, Aberdeen was one of the first cities to rise to defend
Scotland in the struggle against the English in the Wars of Independence and
offered protection to Robert the Bruce during this period. In return, the city
was rewarded with the 'Freedom of Lands', whereby the folks people no longer
had to pay rent. The money that was saved was diverted into a Common Good Fund,
to be spent on civic projects. Today, this money is still used to pay for the
maintenance of the city's many parks.
Aberdeen expanded greatly in the 19th century. Two architects, Archibald Simpson
and John Smith, designed many of the city's buildings using the local granite,
giving Aberdeen the nickname of 'The Granite City'. The latter part of the 19th
century saw Alexander Marshall Mackenzie continue the work of creating impressive
public buildings. He was responsible for the new parts of Marischal College,
Aberdeen Art Gallery and Gray's School of Art among others.
