Mini guide to Banbury

Situated between London and Birmingham in the beautiful Cotswolds region of England, Banbury is a busy market town famed for the historical Banbury Cross and its centuries old cakes. Banbury also boasts Europe's largest cattle market and a couple of famous old inns.

Most people associate Banbury with the nursery rhyme 'Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross'; the original cross featured in the rhyme was destroyed by the Puritans in the early 17th century and was replaced about 250 years later. The cross is located on Horse Fair road, south of St Mary's Church. Much of the old town was destroyed in the 18th century, but the Neo-Classical St Mary's Church still stands.

A wander around the old town will reveal twisting medieval streets flanked by interesting buildings and pedestrianised areas. Not far from Banbury Cross is the 17th century Whately Hall Hotel, famed for its original ales, and just to the northwest on Parson's street is another famous inn, the Reindeer. For respite, head for the People's Park that lies west of St Mary's Church.

Banbury is also great for shopping and the High street has an excellent range of local and brand name stores, as well as several cafés serving up traditional Banbury cakes with their currant-studded pastry and lemon fragrance. The cattle market is just outside the CBD and market days are Thursday and Saturday.

Farther afield, Broughton Castle is just to the west of Banbury and was originally home to the 'fine lady' featured in the Banbury Cross nursery rhyme; it is still home to later generations of the same family today. Also worth visiting if you have a car is the old town of Buckingham to the southeast, the market town of Bicester to the south and picturesque Moreton-in-Marsh to the southwest.

Banbury is accessible from junction 11 on the M40 motorway and lies 135kms northwest of London and 85kms southeast of Birmingham. Four trains an hour leave for Banbury from London's Paddington and Marylebone stations and there is also a rail service from Birmingham International Airport, the closest airport to Banbury. Numerous National Express buses serve Banbury throughout the day from both London and Birmingham.
