Mini guide to Basildon

Located roughly 30 miles east of London, Basildon in Essex County is an industrial town and the administrative centre of the Basildon district. Historically, the town is not very old, having only been created in 1949 through the amalgamation of several smaller towns; however, the history of the area goes back a lot farther and evidence of Stone Age settlements has been found.

Built in 1877, St Mary's and All Saints Church is one of Basildon's oldest buildings. Having once provided religious services for the people of Langdon, the building later stood empty in a state of dilapidation for many years until it was bought privately and converted into a private residence; it can be viewed from the outside only now.

It's probably fair to say that Basildon is not an ideal tourist destination and attractions about the town are far from abundant. However, the Motorboat Museum is worth a visit and features over 31 exhibits of motorboats dating from 1823 to the present. There are also scale models that can be operated on water by remote control, providing fun for children and the young at heart.

Dining options in Basildon are varied with Chinese, Italian, Indian and Turkish restaurants on offer as well as a range of establishments serving traditional British fare. For nightlife, visitors will probably have to settle for a pleasant drink at one of the area's local pubs or a movie at the local cinema complex. Shopping facilities in the town are good, with the Eastgate Centre offering a range of both independent and well known retailers.

For an alternative day out from Basildon, try nearby Chelmsford, the county town of Essex. Chelmsford's places of interest include its magnificent cathedral and Hylands House and Park, the latter being a historic former country house set in well kept gardens which visitors are permitted to stroll around.

The A127 bypasses the Basildon to the north while the A13 bypasses it to the south. Basildon has its own train station which is connected to London on the Fenchurch Street line. Meanwhile, London's Gatwick and Heathrow international airports are the closest for air connections.
