What to see by car: Basingstoke

The area surrounding Basingstoke offers a wealth of historical and beautiful
places to visit. Basing House, once England's largest private palace, was besieged
by Oliver Cromwell's forces before being razed to the ground. At the site are
Medieval and Civil War earthworks, the foundations and cellars of the Tudor
mansion, a 16th century grange barn and the Jacobean garden with its Tudor walls.
Alternatively, the Whitchurch Silk Mill, a unique early 19th century watermill
located in northern Hampshire, keeps alive the art of silk weaving. Here you
can see silk is woven into luxurious fabrics using Victorian machinery.
Meanwhile, the Victorian Highclere Castle, in nearby Newbury, Berkshire, was
created by the same man who designed the Houses of Parliament-Sir Charles Barry.
It is now home to the Earl of Carnarvon, whose ancestors discovered the tomb
of Tutankhamen. An exhibition of their discoveries can be found in the Egyptian
Centre at the castle.
The spectacular Winchester Cathedral, in the nearby city of Winchester, is
where Jane Austen, the 19th century novelist and author of Pride and Prejudice,
is buried. Meanwhile, the Roman town of Silchester, formerly known as Calleva
Atrebatum, has one of the best examples of a surviving Roman town wall. In fact,
the entire circuit of the town wall can still be seen today, and the Silchester
Roman town trail provides a beautiful and tranquil setting for walks.
