Geography of Bath

Bath is located in beautiful countryside of Somerset, near the Bristol Channel,
and is an area full of quaint villages and beautiful forests. Bordered by Wiltshire
to the East, the Mendip Hills to the south and the Cotswolds to the north, Somerset
prides itself in having pristine forests. This geography makes the region hilly,
but also lush with vegetation. It is a favourite for nature lovers and great
for outdoor activities.
Bath lies on the southern most tip of the Cotswolds and is thus often used
as a starting point for walkers wishing to traverse the hundreds of miles of
the Cotswold Way. The bulk of the Cotswolds lie in Gloucestershire, covering
some 600 square miles. The Cotswold Way was designated a local distance footpath
in 1970 and a National Trail in 1998 and runs along the western escarpment,
starting close to Shakespeare's Stratford and finishing in Bath.
The River Avon flows through North East Somerset and there are marinas at Keynsham,
Saltford and Bath. The Legend of King Arthur is associated with the Avon valley
near Glastonbury, to the south. Other principal rivers in Somerset are the Exe
and Parrett, whose fertile valleys are devoted to agriculture. Dairy farming
(especially cheddar cheese), cider production and fruit growing are important
industries in this area.
