What to see by car: Bath

Bath is located between two areas of outstanding natural beauty: the Cotswolds
and the Mendips. It is also the gateway to the lakes, valleys and villages of
Northeast Somerset. Bath is thus a popular launching point into these lovely
wilderness areas.
Avon Valley Country Park offers a great day out for the whole family, located
5 miles outside of Bath city centre. There is an outdoor adventure playground
and junior assault course for the children. The park itself is designed as a
riverside trail, with lots of opportunity to watch animals and birds in their
natural habitat.
The Cotswolds were declared England's first area of outstanding beauty (c.1930)
and border Bath to the south, covering some 600 square miles. This area boasts
numerous historic homes, gardens and arboreta, which are worth exploring by
car. A little further away in Oxfordshire lies Blenheim Palace, the home of
the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough as well as the birthplace of Sir Winston
Churchill, are worth a day trip.
The Mendip Hills are a chain of prominent limestone hills that extend inland
from the coast, extending from Blagdon in the west to Chewton Mendip in the
east. The area offers a wide array of outdoor activities, as well as visitor's
attractions which include the Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves and Chew Valley
Lakes. The historic town of Shepton Mallet is set in the Mendip foothills about
15 miles outside of Bath and is at the geographical heart of the Mendip District.
It was strategically important in Roman times (the Fosse Way, now the A37, passes
close by).
Several magnificent cathedrals surround Bath, and are well worth a day trip.
The Glastonbury Abbey, thought to be the first Christian sanctuary in Britain,
is not far from the famous Glastonbury Tor - a magnificent landmark visible
for miles around. Wells Cathedral is famous for its tradition of pilgrimages
for over 800 years, the other magnificent religious structure in the area is
Salisbury Cathedral, which houses Europe's oldest working clock, as well as
a copy of the Magna Carta. This cathedral also boasts the highest spire in Britain.
The city of Bristol is located only 11 miles south-east of Bath and offers
a unique maritime history with lots of beautiful architecture and a thriving
shopping and entertainment district.
