Mini guide to Birkenhead

Birkenhead, Merseyside, is a town which has been inhabited since as early as the 12th century. However, it was only during the Victorian era that both people and money spilled across the Mersey River from Liverpool into Birkenhead and the town's true development began. These days the town attracts visitors both for its history and its heritage, and is popular due to its close proximity to cosmopolitan Liverpool.

For a truly historic trip, visitors should take the time to visit Birkenhead Priory, which is Merseyside's oldest building. Built by Benedictine monks in 1150, this magnificent construction saw its first restoration over a century ago and is still being improved. Now a popular tourist centre, it is home to a museum as well as offering space for concerts and similar large functions.

Birkenhead's historic warship collection is also a popular visitor attraction with vessels from a range of 20th century conflicts. The collection appeals to those interested in both war and maritime history, as well as those who simply appreciate the magnificence of large scale engineering. If warships aren't your thing, then try the Lady Lever Art Gallery, where visitors can witness one of the most beautiful collections of fine and decorative arts in the country.

Birkenhead's restaurants span the globe, with everything from traditional British to Indian and Greek food on offer, as well as all the usual well known fast food restaurants. Nightlife is restricted to the town's relatively mainstream pub and club collection, while more adventurous visitors can head across the Mersey into Liverpool where every scene imaginable is represented.

For a day out from Birkenhead, Liverpool, one of the UK's busiest and most happening cities is only a short train or ferry ride away. Once there you can check out the famous Albert Dock, visit places associated with the Beatles or simply spend the day shopping in its vast range of popular and independent retail establishments.

By car Birkenhead can be reached along the M53 motorway, while those travelling by rail can access Birkenhead Central Station from Liverpool Lime Street (about a 10- minute journey). Liverpool's John Lennon Airport is the nearest international air connection.
