Geography of Birmingham

Birmingham was, unfortunately, heavily bombed during WWII and has lost a lot
of its charm because of this. The post-war rebuilding effort has left the city
with sprawling motorways, ugly shopping malls and housing blocks, giving it
the feel of a concrete jungle. However, the city has done much to change its
appearance and image over the last decade. One of the highlights of Birmingham's
geography is its vast network of canals.
Birmingham's canal network flows right through the heart of the city and the
first canal was opened in 1769 and linked Birmingham to Wednesbury. There are
five major and many minor canals that converge within the city and only became
a single system on nationalisation in 1948. There are also many locks on the
canals including the famous Guillotine Lock in Kings Norton, which was used
to control the flow of water between canals owned by the different companies.
The most famous of the canals is the Worcester & Birmingham canal, which
opened in 1771. This canal allowed for the first time, for goods and coal to
travel from Birmingham to the Midlands, substantially lowering transportation
costs. It is still possible at the Gas Street Basin to see where the Worcester
& Birmingham and Birmingham & Fazeley canals meet.
The city is located two-hours drive north of London, midway between Britain's
capital and the cities of Manchester and Liverpool. The area surrounding it
is fairly built up but the countryside is accessible.
