What to see by foot: Birmingham

Birmingham boasts a wealth of beautiful architecture, especially in the city
centre, and it can easily explored by foot. The Town Hall, which was built in
the 1830s is a wonderful example of Victorian architecture. Inspired by classical
Roman temples, it has 40 Corinthian columns. The Council House, built in Renaissance
style in the 1870s has a clock known locally as 'Big Brum' (Brum being the local
nickname for Birmingham.)
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is famous for its permanent collection of
pre-Raphaelite art and it considered to be one of the finest art museums outside
London. The museum also has exhibits on Birmingham's industries and local history
and archaeology. For something different, visit the Ikon Gallery, in Brindlaysplace,
one of Europe's premier venues for modern and contemporary art. Also, the Barber
Institute of Fine Arts, at the University of Birmingham, is considered to be
one of the world's finest small galleries, with works by Degas, Monet, Renoir
and Turner.
For jewellery lovers, there is no place like the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham.
This area has been full of jeweller's workshops since the 16th century and is
truly fascinating. The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter illustrates the skill
of the jeweller's craft, and a tour of the original Smith & Pepper jewellery
factory is interesting. For some jewellery shopping, don't miss the Craft &
Antiques Sunday Market, which takes place here once a month.
There are three churches worth visiting in the city centre. The neo-classical
St. Philip's Cathedral, which was built in the early 18th century, has a magnificent
Baroque tower, and stunning stained glass windows. St. Martin's church is Birmingham's
oldest church, dating from the 13th century and is also known for its stained
glass windows. St. Chad's Cathedral was the first Roman Catholic church to be
built in Britain after the Reformation, displaying 14th century Gothic style.
