Historical interest: Birmingham

Like many British cities, Birmingham started out as a small market town. By
the 16th century, the city's metal workers gained national reputation for producing
excellent knives and tools. At this time Birmingham was manufacturing arms and
supplying swords to the Parliamentarian side during the Civil War.
Soon Birmingham's proximity to vast coal and iron deposits, together with the
industrial revolution, quickly turned it into a centre for trade and industry.
Birmingham became known as the 'city of a thousand trades', because of its vast
diversity of manufacturing capabilities and expertise. In fact, Birmingham still
retains its diverse excellence in manufacturing to this day, with factories
producing cars, jewellery and chocolate.
The industrial boom also brought many workers and many improvements were made
to the city to house the growing population and meet the needs of industry.
A massive system of canals was built to cope with traffic and the city's boundaries
were enlarged to make it the second largest city in England. However, many of
the beautiful buildings built during this time were destroyed by heavy bombing
during WW II.
Although infamous for its ugly, concrete post-war rebuilding effort, Birmingham
has come a long way. It has become a very successful conference city, boasting
three state-of-the-art venues: The National Exhibition Centre, International
Convention Centre and National Indoor Arena. The city has also spent large amounts
of money redeveloping and restoring the canal area, which is now a favourite
among locals and visitors alike.
