Mini guide to Blackfriars

Fleet Street, running eastwards from the Strand towards Ludgate Hill and St. Paul's, was once the newspaper and printing district of London, and while most of these businesses have moved out to less expensive areas, the venerable old buildings of the printing houses can still be seen here.

This area is home to some famous pubs that are worth a visit. Playwrights William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson used to be patrons of the Old Mitre Tavern (now No. 37 Fleet Street). Samuel Pepys and Dr. Johnson drank at the Devil's Tavern (No.1 Fleet Street) and the most famous of the Fleet Street pubs is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, with parts of the building dating back to 1667. El Vinos wine bar, at the western end of Fleet Street (opposite Fetter Lane), is still a hang out for journalists.

The main tourist attraction in this area is St. Paul's Cathedral, designed by Christopher Wren and built after the Great Fire of 1666. The cathedral is perhaps most famous for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Don't miss the Whispering Gallery in the dome of the cathedral.

For jewellery buffs, a visit to Hatton Garden, London's jewellery and diamond district, is fun for shopping or just browsing. Also worthwhile is a visit to the London Silver Vaults, dating back to 1882, with over 40 silver dealers under one roof.

Near Mansion House tube station is Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, a reconstruction of the 1599 original. Theatre productions are held on a regular basis and there is a permanent exhibition showing what life was like in Shakespeare's time.

This area can be accessed via Blackfriars station (Mainline rail, Circle and District line) or St. Paul's (Central line) tube stations, but it does not really have many hotels. However, it does provide convenient access to the City and other central areas of London.
