Mini guide to Blackpool

A popular getaway for Britons since the 19th century, Blackpool remains one of Europe's most visited resorts. Its 'Golden Mile' of piers, fortune-tellers, amusement arcades, tram and donkey rides, fish-and-chip shops, candyfloss stalls, and fun pubs provide and endless array of entertainment.

The famous Victorian Blackpool Tower and the wondrous spectacular five-mile long light show known as the 'Illuminations' are just a few of the highlights, while the Pleasure Beach theme park boasts hundreds of rides, including one the world's largest roller coasters. Further along the promenade is the Golden Mile, the slot machine capital of Britain, which also hosts the Sea Life Centre where you can see sharks and many other marine animals.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the major attractions, the peaceful Stanley Park is a great place to relax. In the city centre, The Winter Gardens (on Church Street) is one of Britain's most amazing buildings, partly Tudor, partly Strauss' Vienna and even partly Roman.

If you want a break from the town, a short drive away are numerous charming towns and villages, from coastal resorts to hinterland hideaways. Further afield are the magnificent architectural heritage of Lancaster and the world famous Lake District, a region of breathtaking natural beauty.

Located a short distance from the beach, the city centre offers an excellent selection of shops boasting most major retail names. There is also a wide range of cuisine on offer, with many Indian, Italian and French restaurants. For nightlife, you can choose from theatre, classical concerts, gigs and an enormous number of pubs and clubs.

Blackpool is served by an excellent road network, regular train and bus services, and its own airport, located just to the south of the resort.
